What Is the 2020 Census?

The 2020 Census counts every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia and 5 U.S. territories. The count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency.

By April 1, 2020, each household should receive an invitation by mail to respond to a short questionnaire. You can respond in three (3) ways: online, by phone, or by mail. This will be the first time that you will be able to respond to the Census online. Starting in May 2020, the Census Bureau will begin following up in person with homes that have not responded to the Census.

Why Do We Conduct This Count?

The Census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers and many others use to provide daily services, products and support for you and our community.

The results determine congressional representation and federal funding for states and communities, including New Lenox. Every year, more than $675 billion goes towards schools, hospitals, roads, and other vital programs, which are all based on Census data.

While we all are required by law to participate, the Census Bureau is also required by law to protect your answers. The Census Bureau does not disclose any personal information.
