Waste - Garbage, Recycling, & Yard
Garbage, Recycling, and Yard Waste Pickup thru Homewood Disposal
Please refer to the Garbage and Recycling Pickup in New Lenox, IL page from Homewood Disposal for all your questions about their service.
Yard waste is an optional service through Homewood Disposal, and the Village operates a leaf truck and branch collection Program.
- All yard waste must be contained in 33-gallon brown paper bags, specifically designed for yard debris. Each bag must have a Homewood Disposal yard waste sticker affixed to it. Blue 95-gallon yard waste carts are also available to rent from Homewood Disposal. For pricing information, please call the (their) office at 708-798-1004.
- Branches may be cut into 3 feet or 4 feet lengths, no larger than 6 inches in diameter, and placed into the bags or tied into reasonable sized bundles. Each bag and or bundle must have a yard waste sticker attached for the material to be collected.
- No plastic bags or any household garbage or wrappings should be mixed in the yard waste bags or carts. We will not be able to collect any yard waste containers that have these contaminants in them.
- Yard waste will be collected one time per week on the same day as your household waste from April 1 through November 30.
- When using the blue 95-gallon yard waste containers for refuse during the months of December through March, you must attach 3 red garbage stickers to the cart or your garbage will not be picked up.
Free Leaf Pick-Up Period
- We would like to remind Village residents that the Village of New Lenox offers its residents an alternative to leaf burning. Each Fall during a 6-week period and each Spring during a 2-week period, leaves that are bagged in the brown paper yard waste bags are collected free of charge to the residents.
- As part of the Village's contract with our disposal service, Village residents who place their leaves in brown paper yard waste bags do not have to affix yard waste stickers on the bags during the 6-week during the Fall and 2-week period during the Spring. These yard waste bags are collected by Homewood Disposal on the same day as your regular garbage collection.
- The fall free leaf collection usually starts the middle week of October with the ending day typically the last Saturday in November, which coincides with the annual end-dates of landscape waste facilities' season. Our Spring free leaf collection period typically begins the first full week of April and runs for two weeks.
- Please note: Yard waste bags filled with grass clippings, garden waste, and brush still require that yard waste stickers be affixed to each bag or bundle.
Free Leaf Bags for Senior Citizens
- In addition to the free leaf collection for bagged leaves, the Village offers ten free yard waste bags per Fall for our Senior Citizen Households. Each fall, our senior residents are provided ten free yard waste bags as part of our refuse contract with Homewood Disposal.
- We would like to remind Village residents who are Senior Citizens (over the age of 65) to stop by Village Hall to get their packet of ten free yard waste bags. Bags will be available from mid-September through the end of November.
- Please provide a form of identification as proof of senior residency and eligibility.

The Village is continuing the leaf collection service for residents. The Village will send out leaf collection Equipment and vacuum your leaves from your parkway. Residents must place the leaves in the parkway and not on the street.
The Truck begins on the north side of the village and works its way south each week.
Please note: Follow these helpful guidelines to ensure that this service will operate quickly, safely, and efficiently.
- Place leaves on the parkway parallel to the street and approximately 12-inches behind the curb and the edge of the pavement. No farther than 3 feet from the curb. Leaves can not be placed in the street or in the curb/gutter. If the leaves are placed in the street or gutter, they have a greater chance of blowing and will obstruct the flow of storm water and cause street flooding during rain events.
- Do not include any debris such as: garden materials, brush, cans, paper, bottles, branches, etc. These foreign materials can cause damage to leaf collection personnel and equipment.
- Do NOT place leaves behind obstacles such as: parked vehicles, trees, mailboxes, fire hydrants, streetlights, etc. The machine is quite large and can't reach behind obstacles. Leaves will not be picked up if blocked.
Alternative Options Are Also Encouraged
- Mowing: In some neighborhoods where trees are not mature, utilizing a mulching lawn mower adds the leaves back into the lawn, providing nutrients to the soil.
- Free Leaf Disposal Program: For more information, view the Free Leaf Pick-Up Period section of the "Weekly Yard Waste Pickup by Homewood Disposal (April 1 through November 30)" tab.
- Leaf Bags for Senior Citizens: For more information, view the Free Leaf Bags for Senior Citizens section of the "Weekly Yard Waste Pickup by Homewood Disposal (April 1 through November 30)" tab.
The Village of New Lenox Public Works Department offers a Branch-Pick-up Program April through October.
Depending on the weather, crews will be dispatched on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month.
Please follow these helpful guidelines to ensure that this service will operate quickly and efficiently:
- Residents need to contact the Public Works Department by calling 815-215-4800 to be placed on the list each time they need a pick-up.
- Please allow a 2 to 3 day buffer for pick-up, as high volume requests cannot be accomplished in a one-day time frame.
- Materials that will not be picked up include but are not limited to railroad ties, wood telephone poles, construction material, lumber stones, roots or root balls, vines, dirt, nails and metal. These materials will damage our equipment and present unsafe conditions for Village crews and the general public.
- Branches must be placed in the parkway, as crews will not encroach on private property to remove branches.
- Please do not tie or bundle branches.
- Please place branches with thorns in a separate pile.
- Only branches 1 inch in diameter or larger will be picked up, as smaller materials do not go through the chipper properly. The Maximum diameter size is 12 inches.
- When placing the branches in the parkway, do not block the sidewalk, streetlight base, fire hydrants, or manholes.
- Place the cut ends of the branches towards the street.
- For longer branches that may block the sidewalk, we will require the cut ends of the branches be pointing to the left side of your property as you face your property from the curb. When the chipper pulls up to your home, the chipper opening will be facing the cut ends of the branches. This allows our crews to load the branches safely and efficiently.
- The intent of this program is to help Village of New Lenox residents with their properties maintenance and is not intended to clean up commercial debris or debris from other jurisdictions properties.
For any storms with wind gusts reaching 50 mph and storms declared a disaster, the Village will be out patrolling the town for damage. We recommend that residents still call to schedule a branch pick-up where the above guidelines would apply to ensure we don't miss you.
Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please call the Public Works Department at 815-215-4800.
