  • Permits are required for your protection and are a vital part in the enforcement of building codes. Failure to obtain the necessary permits is a violation of the Village Code and may result in penalties.

  • It is the responsibility of the property owner to obtain a permit and post it on the job site; however, a contractor may apply for and obtain a permit on behalf of the property owner.

  • A building permit is required when any structural change or major alteration is made to a building and for any new construction. A permit is required for decks, driveways (new, replacement or expansion), electric service upgrades, fences (new or replacement), attached and detached garages, gazebos, generators, porches, reroofs, screened porches, three season rooms, room additions, sheds, signs, swimming pools, hot tubs, underground sprinkler systems, window and/or siding replacements and demolitions.

  • Many activities require notification of J.U.L.I.E. before you dig. Some activities, such as landscaping, patio construction and tree planting, require a call to J.U.L.I.E. even though they do not require a building permit. For more information, contact J.U.L.I.E. at 800-892-0123.

    • Village of New Lenox Municipal Code
    In an effort to ensure quality standards above and beyond these model codes, the Village has also amended, by ordinance, certain sections of each of these codes. To keep pace with new materials and improved technology, building codes are routinely amended and any proposed amendments are posted on the Capital Development Board website prior to adoption. The amendments and current ordinances are available at the Village Hall.

  • All contractors that work on any project in the Village are required to register with the Village prior to proceeding with the project. Please consult the Contractor Registration Application for the applicable bonds, certificates of insurance and fees.

  • You may contact the New Lenox Township Tax Assessor at 815-485-9419 for property tax information.

  • The minimum cost of a permit for most small homeowner projects such as decks, driveways, fences, and sheds is $75. New construction and remodeling permit fees vary in cost and will be determined after the plans are reviewed and approved.

  • Once issued, a building permit is valid for six months. Please contact the Building Department if your project will not be completed within this time frame.

  • Inspections can be requested by calling the Building Department at 815-462-6490. Inspection requests must be made a minimum of 24 hours in advance. Inspections can be made by email.

    When scheduling an inspection, be sure to have the permit number, address, and lot number for new residential construction, as this information is required to schedule an inspection.

  • Building permit applications are available on the Village’s website and at the New Lenox Village Hall. The completed application and required supporting documents can be submitted in person at the Village Hall.
