Counterfeit Money Alert

Counterfeit Money Alert

We are alerting local businesses on how to spot counterfeit bills.  The most common counterfeiting reported to the New Lenox Police Department (“NLPD”), is “bleached” or “washed” money. This is where a smaller biller is bleached and then a higher denomination is reprinted on the bill. A cashier generally checks the bill with a marker and the bill will pass the test because it is (or was) real money.   An easy way to double check the money is for employees to take a moment and look at the holograph images on the bill to make sure that they are the same.  Another detection is to hold the bill up to the light and check the security thread.

The NLPD provided the following documents from the Secret Service, which has the best information in regard to detecting fake money.  You may call the NLPD at 815-462-6100 with any questions.
