About the Safe Community Coalition
The foundation for the New Lenox Safe Community Coalition started in November 2008 when New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann and the Village Board decided to seek designation as a "Safe Community" through the National Safety Council and World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion. The Safe Community America designation is awarded to communities that demonstrate leadership in promoting safety, reducing injuries, and preparing their citizens for natural and man-made disasters.
The New Lenox Village Board passed a resolution which signified its commitment to utilizing a collaborative approach to promoting safety within the community and its commitment to joining the International Safe Communities Network. The New Lenox Safe Community Coalition was established and became the organization responsible for identifying injury prevention priorities, safety promotion, preparedness activities and assessment of these efforts within the community.
The New Lenox Safe Community Coalition worked throughout 2009 and into 2010 to satisfy the various "Indicators" outlined in the Safe Communities America Application for Accreditation. Following a successful On-Site Assessment, the Village of New Lenox was accredited as a "Safe Community" by the National Safety Council and the WHO Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion on April 27, 2010. New Lenox was the 9th community in the United States to receive this prestigious designation. The Village of New Lenox was re-accredited as a Safe Community on June 1, 2016 and again in 2021.
Mission
Through a collaborative process, the New Lenox Safe Community Coalition will improve the health, safety and quality of life for residents and visitors through injury analysis and the implementation of programs designed to increase safety and prevent injuries.
