Temporary Signs

Temporary promotional signs are permitted within the Village of New Lenox; however, these signs require review and approval by the Community Development Department.  The following are the various types of permitted temporary promotional signs.  Please refer to the Sign requirements of the Zoning Ordinance for further sign details and specifics. 

Temporary Sign (in Right of Way)

Permitted signs: Temporary signs that advertise a business, product or service throughout the Village are required to obtain a Temporary Sign Permit through the Community Development.

Area/Number: Temporary Signs shall not exceed six (6) square feet in area and four (4) feet in height.  There shall only be a maximum ten (10) temporary signs placed throughout the Village at one time. 

Location: There shall be no more than one (1) temporary sign per quadrant of the intersection at any one time.  Temporary Signs shall be limited to the following intersections:

  • Cedar Road and Francis Road (along Cedar Road south of Francis Road only)
  • Cedar Road and Illinois Highway                         
  • Cedar Road and Laraway Road (along Cedar Road north of Laraway Road only)
  • Vine Street and Haven Avenue
  • Nelson Road and Haven Avenue
  • Nelson Road and Joliet Highway
  • Nelson Road and Illinois Highway
  • Nelson Road and Laraway Road (along Nelson Road only)
  • Schoolhouse Road and U.S. Route 30 (along Schoolhouse Road south of U.S. Route 30 only)
  • Schoolhouse Road and Joliet Highway
  • Schoolhouse Road and Laraway Road (along Schoolhouse Road only)
  • Joliet Highway and Spencer Road: 

Duration: Temporary advertising signs shall only be permitted for a maximum period of 14 consecutive calendar days.

Sign permits for Special Events take approximately 1 to 2 days to review.

Special Events Signs

Permitted signs: Anniversary signs, grand opening signs and signs advertising some other special event are permitted signs.

Area/Number: Special event signs shall not exceed 50 square feet in area and ten feet in height.  Only one special event sign shall be permitted per lot, except for shopping centers.  

Location: Special event signs may be attached to the building or installed within the front yard setback a minimum ten feet from the property line, provided that pedestrian and vehicular visibility is not affected.

Duration: Special event signs shall be permitted for a period of time not to exceed fourteen (14) calendar days.  Each business is permitted four special events per calendar year. Each special event requires a separate permit.  If multiple temporary promotional signs are issued to a single business, the 14 day time period for each permit shall run concurrently.

Inflatable Balloons

Area/Number: Inflatable balloons shall not exceed 25 feet in height and diameter.  Only one inflatable balloon is permitted per lot, except for shopping centers.  

Location: Inflatable balloons shall be ground mounted and properly secured and located a minimum twenty (20) feet from any property line.

Duration: Inflatable balloons shall be permitted for a period of time not to exceed fourteen (14) calendar days. Each business is permitted four inflatable balloons per calendar year.  Each inflatable balloon requires a separate permit. If multiple temporary promotional signs are issued to a single business, the 14 day time period for each permit shall run concurrently.

Grand Opening Parking Lot Banners

Area/Number: Grand opening parking lot banners shall not exceed 12 square feet in area and there shall not be more than two grand opening parking lot banners per parking lot.

Location: All grand opening banners shall be located on private parking lot standards. No grand opening banner is permitted to be attached to a Village owned or maintained street light or traffic signal.

Duration: Grand Opening banners shall be permitted for a period of time not to exceed fourteen 14 calendar days.  If multiple temporary promotional signs are issued to a single business, the 14 day time period for each permit shall run concurrently.

Sign permits for Special Events take approximately 1 to 2 days to review.

Sandwich Panel Signs

Area/Number: Sandwich panel signs shall not exceed 24 inches by 42 inches in size per panel.  Only one sandwich panel sign is permitted per lot, except for shopping centers.  Each business in a shopping center is permitted one sandwich panel sign, provided that the maximum number of sandwich panel signs in a shopping center at any one time shall not exceed 50% of the total number of individual businesses within the shopping center.

Location: Sandwich panels shall be placed next to the building that they serve provided that ingress and egress are not affected.

Materials and Installation: Sandwich signs shall be securely anchored to the ground by mechanical devices to resist uplift and movement of an equivalent wind speed of ninety (90) miles/hour.

Inspection: All sandwich panel signs are subject to an inspection.

Duration: Sandwich panel signs shall be permitted for a period of time not to exceed fourteen (14) calendar days.  Each individual business shall be permitted four sandwich panel signs per calendar year.  Each sandwich panel sign is required a separate permit.  If multiple temporary promotional signs are issued to a single business, the fourteen (14) day time period for each permit shall run concurrently.

Sign permits for Special Events take approximately 1 to 2 days to review.

Vertical Banners

Area/Number: No vertical banner shall exceed 30 square feet in area and 15 feet in height.  There shall not be more than three vertical banners permitted per lot, except for shopping centers.  Each business in a shopping center is permitted one vertical banner, provided that the maximum number of vertical banners in a shopping center at any one time shall not exceed 50% of the total number of individual businesses within the shopping center.

Location: Vertical banners shall be permitted within the front yard setback a minimum ten feet from any property line, provided that vehicle and pedestrian visibility is not affected.
